Multnomah County Online Voters' Guide

METRO - Council District 5

Rex Burkholder

REX BURKHOLDER

OCCUPATION: Metro Councilor, District 5

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Policy Director – Bicycle Transportation Alliance; Office of Student Development – Portland State University; Science Teacher – Portland Public Schools.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: BS Biology, Portland State University; MA Urban & Environmental Policy, Tufts University

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Governor's Climate Change Integration Group; Metro Transportation Policy Alternatives Committee; Oregon Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

Dear Voter,

When I ran for a second term at Metro four years ago, I laid out five areas where I wanted to make a difference: land use, economy, housing, transportation and protecting nature. I am happy to report that we have made good progress in each. As you know, this has not happened by me, or Metro, working alone.

On my website, rex4metro.com you can find a “Report Card” on the past four years. I hope you will find it a testament to the power of working together as well as an idea of what we might yet accomplish. I am running for re-election to the Metro Council because I am energized by the progress we've achieved as well as my deep commitment this important work.

The key ingredient to our success has been transforming confrontation into collaboration. Solving the challenges of the 21 st century requires that we all work together.

In 1992, voters charged Metro with creating a sustainable future for us all. Metro's work in recycling, greenspace protection and innovative transportation has helped keep this place wonderful to live and work in.

Climate change, a shifting economy and energy uncertainty are new and daunting challenges. We have begun work on a regional climate change action plan and sustainability network to support efforts to green our communities and businesses.

I hope you will feel that your confidence in me is well rewarded with an effective, hard working and progressive representative.

Endorsements:
